Suffolk Sheep Society – Scottish Area Sale Stirling - 40,000gns top for Suffolk Ram Lamb

A top price of 40,000gns for the Show Champion, complete with a further eight lots selling at five-figures, set the scene at an electric Suffolk Society ram sale at Stirling, where Mark Priestley's Limestone flock led the trade.

Suffolk Sheep Society Chief Executive Robin McIlrath said “This has been an excellent sale this year. I am particularly pleased that their isn't just a single big headline price, but there was quality prices throughout the sale. Achieving an average of £2,841,an increase of £722 on last year, demonstrates this. it has been a difficult winter and spring for our breeders and its great to see such a buoyant and positive sale on the back of some challenging months.”

Selling later on in the day at 40,000gns was a son of Strathbogie A Kind of Magic, out of a ewe by Castleisle Knockout. Reserve Overall Champion at Balmoral (RUAS) in May, its dam was sold for 5,500gns at the 2017 Three Nations Sale. He was knocked down to Andrew Wilson from Donegal, with Ronan McLaughlin (Donegal) taking a third and Mark Priestley retaining a third share. Not satisfied with getting the top price, Limestone flock also achieved the highest average for pens selling 3 or more sheep with J Hanly from Tipperary paying 7,000gns for the Lakeview No Limits sired KPC:18:00998 out of a Strathbogie dam, and lot 244 being knocked down to M J & J Pinney (Northampton) for 2,800gns. 

Next in the money list was George L Stuart's Birness flock lot 121. This Limestone Legacy sired ram out of a Lakeview Goldrush Sired Birness dam was knocked down for 30,000gns to Stephen Sufferin for addition to his Co Londonderry Crewelands Flock. Birness sold eight sheep at an average of £6,562 with lot 118, a Crewelands Megastar sired ram out of a Ballynacanon Comander sired dam, going to R Lawrence and T Irwin & Sons (both Devon) for 10,000gns.

Pyeston flock's Male, and reserve overall Champion, at both the Fife and West Fife Shows (lot 79) was bought by Stephen Cobbald for 24,000gns from Suffolk for his Lavenham flock. This Limestone Legacy sired ram is out of an Ardlea Champion sired ewe. 

J C Innes (Strathbogie flock) got an average of £8,890 for their 3 lambs with the 22,000gns lot 42 being knocked down to I & J Barbour and S Craft. This Strathbogie A Kind of Magic Sired ram out of a Castleisle Knockout sired dam is a full sister to the 2016 born 6,000gns Strathbogie Samuri.   

Two lambs made 20,000gns including the best from Jimmy Douglas' Cairness Flock (lot 68), bought by John Sinnett for his Stockton flock with J G Douglas retaining a quarter share. J C Innes, M Priestley and P Machray shared A Gault's Northern Ireland Bred Forkin's Mullaghboy Goliath sired lamb (lot 85) out of a Cairness New Approach sired dam. 

Other top prices were for a Rookery lamb with C J Holmes getting 10,000gns from L & M Liggett (Co Tyrone). Also at 10,000gns was the Burnview lot 217 with S & W Tait selling to James Wallace (Wigtownshire), S Lathangie (Fife) and P Delves (Powys).
