With the spectre of Bluetongue 3 virus restrictions hanging over a sale in the restricted zone and breeders trying to work out what can and can’t be done to get sheep home, the numbers were back quite a bit on entry level. However, the stock forward were all in good order and saw a crowded ringside keen and enthusiastically bidding on sheep. It certainly seemed that those who had pre movement tested saw a benefit from doing so with that uncertainty of purchase opening their audience.
The National Dinner & Awards on Friday evening was a great success with around 130 attendees enjoying the meal provided by Snap Crackle and Pork for the second successive year. Good company set the scene for the sale, with a tremendous buzz. As goes with tradition, the show was judged by the President of the Society Glenys Morgan, tapping out her champion from a huge field. This year’s honour going to Birness with lot no 184 taking Male Champion and then Overall Champion at the show and going on to sell for 6,000gns with Rhaeadr lot no 133 in Reserve. The champion ram lamb is heading back to Scotland with AJ & AR Benzie Meikle, Whiterashes Turriff.
The Birness team also came through with the first place pen of three catching the judges eye.
Mogford flock took both Female Champion and Reserve with lot 7 PSJ:24:00800 and lot 23 PSJ:25:00847. The shearling ewe and female champion at the show was a triplet derived from ET by Spittal Outlander and went on to sell at 1,000gns, heading away with Heath Farm Partnership from Sutton End Farm. Lot 23 was a natural single ewe lamb sired by Carony Cha-Ching and going on to top the shop at 1,600gns joining Jake Lonsdales flock at Smailsburn Farm.

Also achieving 1,000gns was for lot number 4 consigned to the sale by Pam Lupton, Kexbeck flock. The ewe, KXL:24:00771 by Rhaeadr Bright Star was a twin lamb from a home bred ewe headed away with Heath Farm Partnership, Sutton End Farm, who were shopping hard for females! Her second lot 5 by Rhaeadr Rock ‘n’ Roll went to 900gns and was snapped up by Hannah Pickthall, Swallow Heights.

Hot on the heels of the top price ewe lamb from Mogford flock, was lot 25 (DND:25:01133) from Sally Beale, Rookery. A single ET lamb by Middlemuir Best of The Best which has a list of siblings that have made the grade in previous sales, with a full sister realising 4,000gns and a full brother at 3,400gns attracting attention from the buyers, I am sure. At the fall of the gavel the winning bid came from CA Jessop and Sons Moorlands Farm.

There was a limited supply of shearling rams with just three forward. Lot 31 M17:24:06549 which was a sub consigned by Anthony Glaves, Brompton flock topping the section at 1,700gns. The ram sired by Tombridge Take a Chance out of a home bred ewe was a single lamb by natural service and headed off with CJ Roots, Kilnford Croft, Castle Douglas Road, Dumfries and Galloway.

There was a great deal of activity before the sale around all the pens, particularly the pen of Jed Sharp, Sharps flock. This was reflected later in the day at the sale with a top call of 20,000gns for lot 193 WPT:25:00518 with fierce competition on the bidding from several parties the gavel finally falling with the ram lamb heading to Myfyr Evans Rhaeadr.
Further lambs in the pen reaching 9,000gns twice for lot number 192 going home with Claire Kenyon from Ormskirk and lot 198 being snapped up by Robert Jenkinson, Dunfell, Penrith. All three ram lambs being sired by Conchar Cruiser, the 10,000gns purchase in 2024 paying dividends.
Stephen Bolland had a good sale with lot 129 LVX:25:05151 reaching 10,000gns, a twin ET ram by Kings Superior meeting approval of the bidders around the ring and going off to his new postcode at Stephen Cobbald’s Lavenham flock.
Often considered not ideal to be first through, the sale got off to a flyer with the Sitlow pen! Their ram lambs were all sired by Jalex X Factor and lot 35 (45Z:25:05922) which had placed 1st in the Elite class, topped the pen at 8,500gns, appealing to eventual buyers W&C Ingram Logie Durno. The second lamb through (45Z:25:05899) reached 8,000gns and headed off to AE Weavers Perrenpit flock in Gloucestershire.
