A Successful National Event
The National Show and Sale was held at Shrewsbury Auction Centre on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 July 2026, with Halls Auctioneers and Straker Chadwick once again at the helm, jointly conducting both the show and the sale.
We are extremely grateful to KLF Insurance Brokers, based in Shrewsbury, for their support during their first year as mainline sponsors of the National Show & Sale. Their sponsorship proved to be a great success, and we are delighted that they have pledged their continued support for next year’s event.
The KLF team thoroughly enjoyed meeting vendors and purchasers and worth considering them when reviewing insurance requirements.
Following inspection of the entries, judging commenced at 2.00 pm under the watchful eye of our current Society President, Glynis Soulsby, who took centre stage to oversee what proved to be a highly competitive day’s judging.
The standard of stock presented reflected the continued strength of the Suffolk breed, with quality evident across all classes and making the judge’s decisions far from straightforward.
National Dinner and Awards
The National Dinner and Awards once again proved to be a tremendous success, creating a positive atmosphere ahead of the following day’s sale. With everyone in excellent spirits, the evening set the tone for a memorable National event.
Our thanks go to Andrew Evans for stepping in for the CEO for the day and acting as Master of Ceremonies throughout the evening, ensuring proceedings ran smoothly and entertaining guests throughout.
Strong Female Entry
With an impressive entry of shearling ewes and ewe lambs, exhibitors provided an excellent opportunity for both established and new breeders to invest in the Suffolk breed. It was particularly encouraging to see several new purchasers investing in multiple females to establish their own flocks.
This level of confidence demonstrates that the Suffolk breed remains in a strong position within the sheep industry. The Suffolk Advantage message continues to gain momentum, and we should never miss an opportunity to promote the many strengths of our breed.
Female Champion: Shearling Ewe
An outstanding class of shearling ewes opened the female championship, with Roger K Denby’s Carnforth flock taking first place with Lot 2, before going on to secure the Female Championship and claim the new Suffolk Sheep Society Trophy for the Best Female at the National Show and Sale.
The champion ewe, sired by Muirton Mystical through AI, was one of a set of twins out of the 2023 home-bred dam A58:23:01045, whose sire and dam were both bred within the Carnforth flock.
The champion later sold for 2,000gns, with M.C. Robinson & Son, West Cocklaw, securing the successful bid.
Although second in the showring, the highest-priced shearling ewe came from Phil Poole’s Salopian Flock. Lot 5, a daughter of Salopian Solid Gold (V87:25:0124), was a single ET lamb out of the Frongoy ewe NAT:23:10745 and realised 2,600gns, selling to J McDowell, Tilton-on-the-Hill, Leicestershire.
Congratulations must also go to him for winning the Bristol Cup as Overall Flock Competition Champion in 2026.
Trade for the shearling ewes was exceptionally strong, achieving a 100% clearance and returning an average of £1,436 to vendors.
Ewe Lambs
The ewe lamb class followed and produced another strong line-up. First place was awarded to Lot 22 from Mr and Mrs MJR & JA Pinney’s Alloaks Flock, which also went on to be named Reserve Female Champion.
The twin lamb J65:22:05735, bred by natural service and reared by its dam, was sired by Jalex 4K and impressed the judge.
The Alloaks flock continues to pride itself on its traditional breeding methods, relying solely on natural service and not using AI or ET within its breeding programme. This approach relies on the true maternal qualities of the pure-bred ewe, with the dam J65:22:04696 sired by Roundacre Manu.
Following competitive bidding, the lamb realised 1,100gns, topping the ewe lamb trade before joining the DF & AE Callan family at the Castlemartin Flock, Haverfordwest.
Shearling Rams
With five shearling rams forward, Lot 32 from Anthony Glaves’ Brompton flock claimed first place in the show ring. A regular consignor of shearling ewes at the National Show and Sale, Anthony, a retail butcher by trade, looks at carcass quality in his breeding. It shows that he knows what he is doing, the judge rewarding his naturally bred twin lamb, which had been entered as a catalogue substitute.
The ram, sired by the home-bred Brompton Black Beauty and out of the home-bred 2024 ewe M17:24:06502, was purchased by L Morris, Parc Farm, Moelfre.
The highest-priced shearling ram, however, came from Paul Herbert’s Wainlode flock. Lot 31 WCD:25:00792, a single ET lamb by the home-bred Wainlode King George, was out of the purchased Rookery ewe DND:23:01019.
The sire, Wainlode King George, is himself by Logiedurno Wild Bill, whose performance figures placed him a step ahead of his full brother, Logiedurno Sonny Bill, making him an exciting prospect for both pedigree and commercial breeding programmes.
Following competitive bidding, the hammer fell at 1,500gns, with Thomas Brothers, Llanfyllin, securing the ram.
Male Champion and Overall Champion
The highlight of the show was undoubtedly the outstanding class of Suffolk ram lambs. Faced with tremendous depth of quality, the judge had no easy task before eventually selecting Lot 150, exhibited by Jed and Benni Lacharoen of the Sharps flock, as the class winner.
The lamb went on to be crowned both Male Champion and the Overall Champion.
The single ET lamb WPT:26:00673 was sired by the home-bred Sharps Submission, himself by Cairness Cooper. On the dam’s side, the pedigree was entirely home-bred, with WPT:23:00281, by Rhaeadr Warrior, tracing back to a 2020 Hawshill dam.
Competition around the ringside was keen before the hammer finally fell at 10,000gns to James Theyer, Bampton, Oxfordshire to join the Clanfield Flock.
Sale Leader Reaches 19,000gns
While the Overall Champion attracted plenty of attention, the highest-priced sheep of the sale came from Stewart Lathangie’s Pyeston Flock.
The flock’s investment in Limestone King of Diamonds continues to pay dividends, with Lot 54 LVL:26:01246 leading the National Sale at an outstanding 19,000gns, making the journey south from Fife more than worthwhile.
The single ET lamb was out of the Frongoy ewe NAT:23:10776, purchased for 4,000gns, which also stood Breed Champion at the Fife Show in 2025.
The successful purchasers were TJ & CR Boden, Sportsmans Flock and S Craft, Lakeview Flock.
The Pyeston pen enjoyed an exceptional day’s trading, with two further sons by Limestone King of Diamonds also selling strongly. Lot 56 realised 4,200gns, while Lot 55 made 3,500gns, underlining the consistency of the breeding programme.
Elite Commercial Ram Lambs
The Elite Commercial Ram Lamb class was won by Stephen Bolland’s Wharfe flock, a regular consignor to the National Show and Sale.
His winning exhibit, Lot 46 LVX:26:05280, was sired by Bridgeview Maximus and out of the home-bred ewe LVX:22:04062. The ram impressed the judge with its commercial attributes before going on to sell for 1,700gns.
Interestingly, his pen mate, sired by Kings Superior, surpassed that figure in the sale ring, selling for 2,000gns.
Pen of Three
The Pen of Three competition was keenly contested, but for the second consecutive year the honours went to Melvin Stuart and family with their Birness flock.
The winning trio comprised Lots 86, 88 and 89, which sold for 3,900gns, 1,300gns and 3,200gns respectively, producing an highly respectful return.
Agriimages Master Class
New for 2026, Agriimages Master Class is held across three of the four Society sales. The winner of each qualifying heat progress to the final, where the public will vote for their overall favourite.
The winning exhibit Lot 84 1W:26:04744 was shown by Melvin himself before going on to top the Birness pen at 9,000gns, selling to Steve and Louise Buckley for their Sitlow flock.
The naturally served twin lamb was sired by Forkins Firenze and out of the home-bred Birness dam 1W:20:02880. The sire was loaned by Steve Barron for AI day, is by Annakisha Bright Eye and stood second in the Open Ram Lamb class at the Scottish Area Branch pre-sale Show at Lanark in 2024.
Representing the National Show and Sale in the Agriimages final is Melvin Stuart of the Birness flock, who joins Mark Priestley of the Limestone flock, winner of the Premier Sale at Ballymena, and John Gibb of the Cairnton flock, winner of the Scottish Branch Sale at Lanark. Top Pen of Three
Top Pen of Three went to Stewart Lathangie, Pyeston flock with Lot 54, Lot 55 and Lot 56 achieving 19,000gns, 3,500gns and 4,200gns respectively. This gave a three lamb average of 8,900gns.
Sale Summary
The National Show and Sale reflected the continued confidence in Suffolk genetics, with strong demand from both established breeders and new purchasers investing in the breed.
The shearling ewe section achieved a 100% clearance, while the ram lambs recorded a 92% clearance rate, underlining the strength of commercial demand. Ram lamb average TBC.
