Howgillfoot’s champion ram lamb takes top price at Lanark
The Scottish Area Branch show and sale was held at Lanark Auction Centre on Wednesday 16th and Thursday 17th July 2025. The ability to take sheep straight from the sale to anywhere in the country, except for Northern Ireland, certainly buoyed the trade. All animals consigned to the sale qualified for movement straight from the sale home without any need for post movement testing for Bluetongue virus attracting buyers, alongside the underpinning of the sale with commercial interest in procuring stock. The centuries old stock exchange between Ireland and Scotland being hampered by restrictions that are out of our control had a part to play in this year’s sale.
Lawrie & Symington Ltd conducted the 90th Scottish Area Show & Sale of Suffolk Sheep on behalf of the Scottish Area Branch where 163 catalogued entries with an 84% clearance rate and six prices crossing the five-figure barrier to a top of 40,000gns – equalling last year’s top price.
Leading the trade at 40,000gns was father and daughter duo, Richard and Lilia Hutchinson, Howgillfoot flock, Kirkby Stephen. Overall Champion at the Pre-Sale Show, he sold online via MartEye to Messrs Innes, Strathbogie flock, Huntly, Finn Christie, Maidenstone flock, Inverurie; and the vendors retaining an equal share. His investment brings home a son of the 30,000gns Howgillfoot Commander and out of a Limestone ewe by the 26,000gns Forkins McCoy.

to J. Innes, Strathbogie flock; F Christe, Maidenstone flock and an equal share retained by the vendor
Early in the day, Myfyr Evans of the Rhaeadr flock, based in Denbigh received 18,000gns for his homebred son, Rhaeadr Northern Champ and is the first ram lamb to be sold off the 16,000gns Kings ewe lamb. Heading back to Wales with Arnold Oare, Groes flock, Holywell.

Messrs Hutchinson were also receiving 15,000gns for another Howgillfoot Commander son, this time out of a homebred dam sired by Crewelands Captain Crusader. He joins the Sportsmans flock with Charlie and Tom Boden.

The pre-sale show Reserve Champion sold for 12,000gns for Messrs Gibb, Cairnton flock based in Fraserburgh. By the €20,000 Annakisha Bright Eye, his homebred dam is sired by the Bridgeview Belvenie. He sold in a five-way share to Messrs Douglas, Cairness; Messrs Stuart, Birness; Messrs Paterson, Cranorskie; Messrs Arnott, Haymount; and the vendor retained an equal share.

At 11,000gns, Messrs Delves from the Bridgeview flock at Powys sold their Limestone Online son – who was Sire of the Year 2024. Out of a homebred dam by the Solwaybank Rock Solid, he heads to Wales to join the Rhaeadr flock at Denbigh for Myfyr Evans.

The last five-figure price was also from the Bridgeview flock and realised 10,000gns. Sired by the 11,000gns Limestone Dare Devil, and out of a homebred dam by Sportsmans Masterplan. He joins brother and sister duo, Iain and Judith Barbour of the Solwaybank flock at Annan.
