Scrapie Monitored Scheme (SMS)

By Suffolk Sheep Society 28th October, 2013

In lamb ewes traded after 1 September 2013, through non-segregated sales, will lose their SMS status unless they are ARR/ARR genotype.

In lamb ewes traded after 1 September 2013, through non-segregated sales, will lose their SMS status unless they are ARR/ARR genotype. If a SMS member takes sheep to a sale and sells them as SMS, these sheep may lose status and the purchaser, if a SMS member, will lose their status as well. Similarly, if a vendor does not sell his animals and takes them home then he too will lose his status.

Please note that if you are holding a sale you must apply to AHVLA to have a segregated sale. If this is not done all SMS members buying in-lamb stock are vulnerable and may lose their status.

If breeders want to sell into SMS flocks then they should genotype their ewes and rams
